1964 Atlantic hurricane season

The 1964 Atlantic hurricane season was an ongoing event in the annual cycle of tropical cyclone formation. It officially started June 1, 1964, and lasted until November 30, 1964.

Three 1964 storms were notable enough to have their names retired, hurricanes Cleo, Dora, and Hilda. Also, three hurricanes hit Florida this season (Cleo, Dora and Isbell), the first time this has happened since 1886.

Hurricane Cleo was a long-lived storm that killed a large number of people and caused serious property damage as it travelled through the Caribbean and into Florida. Fourteen people were killed on Guadeloupe, seven in the Dominican Republic, 132 in Haiti, and one in Cuba. After passing over the islands, Cleo made landfall near Miami, Florida, where it caused $125 million (1964 dollars) in damage.

Hurricane Dora was the first hurricane on record as making landfall in northeastern Florida. It caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damage.

Hurricane Hilda killed 37 when it made landfall in St. Mary Parish, Louisiana, with most of the deaths caused by storm-generated tornadoes. It caused roughly $100 million (1964 dollars) in damage.

In addition to the named storms, there were three unnamed tropical storms. Tropical Storm One caused $300,000 (1964 dollars) in damage to the Jacksonville, Florida area. Tropical Storm Twelve (the named hurricanes filling in the large numbering gap) caused significant flooding in Honduras. Tropical Storm Two never affected land.
