Bar Harbor is a town located in Hancock County, Maine. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,820. Bar Harbor is a famous resort and upper-class summer colony in the Down East region of Maine. Technically a town, Bar Harbor lies close to the city of Ellsworth, Maine.

Discovered in 1796, Bar Harbor was originally named Eden (changed to Bar Harbor March 3, 1918).

The region is served by the Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport in nearby Trenton.

Bar Harbor plays host each year to The Warblers and Wildflowers Festival at the end of May. It is a celebration that celebrates beauty of Bar Harbor’s nature and scenery.

Bar Harbor was once a major resort town for rich American families, such as the Rockefellers and Astors. In 1947, a fire destroyed a large part of the town and took with it many mansions belonging to these elite families.

Bar Harbor is the birthplace of former Vice President and Governor of New York Nelson Rockefeller

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 182.4 km² (70.4 mi²). 109.3 km² (42.2 mi²) of it is land and 73.1 km² (28.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 40.06% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,820 people, 2,142 households, and 1,163 families residing in the town. The population density is 44.1/km² (114.2/mi²). There are 2,805 housing units at an average density of 25.7/km² (66.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.88% White, 0.15% Black or African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.89% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.08% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. 0.62% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,142 households out of which 24.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.5% are married couples living together, 6.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 45.7% are non-families. 34.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.16 and the average family size is 2.78.

In the town the population is spread out with 19.8% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 26.6% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 87.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $37,481, and the median income for a family is $51,989. Males have a median income of $31,085 versus $25,417 for females. The per capita income for the town is $24,103. 8.9% of the population and 4.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.7% of those under the age of 18 and 8.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
