Chiplun

Chiplun (population 60,000) is a city on the MumbaiGoa highway (NH-17) in western India. The city is about 320 km south of Mumbai in the Konkan region of Maharashtra. It is an industrial town catering to mostly the top pharmaceutical and chemical industries. It is a major stop on the Konkan Railway.

The name Chiplun means "The abode of Lord Parshuram". The city lies on the banks of the river Vashishti. To the east of the city lies the Western Ghats. To the west lies Guhagar Beach, about 50km. The region is hilly and the city is situated in a valley. Region has extreme climate, cold in winter, very hot in summer and very wet. Winter temperatures dip to about 10°C at night, but the chill factor makes it seem much lower. Summer days are extremely hot (above 38°C). The rainy season — the monsoons last from June until October. The city is located at 10.76m above sea level. The city is surrounded on all four sides by hills.

The city boasts of a sole theatre — Padma Theatre. A municipal council looks after the civic needs of the city. There are a couple of English-medium schools in Chiplun including a Convent school. It also has an engineering college: Rajaram Shindé College of Engineering affiliated to the University of Mumbai.

Since the city is on a major National Highway, there are adequate accommodations, including hotels, motels and lodges including a five-star hotel — The Taj Riverview Lodge. It is also a junction for those travelling to the Enron (Dhabol) Power Project. The city links the western coast to the interior parts of Maharashtra, one of the few places in that region.

The main language spoken is Marathi although almost all the people can speak Hindi. Spoken English is a rarity in Chiplun although quite a few people can read the language.

The biggest hotel in the area is the Gateway Riverview Lodge [1] (http://www.chiplunhotels.com) located on the Mumbai-Goa highway and is the perfect stopover on the long drive to Goa. It is especially great destination for people from Mumbai and Pune. [2] (http://www.chiplunhotels.com)
