Flandreau, South Dakota

Flandreau is a city located in Moody County, South Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,376. It is the county seat of Moody CountyTemplate:GR. It was named in honor of Charles Eugene Flandrau, a judge in the territory and state of Minnesota, who is credited with saving the nearby community of New Ulm, Minnesota from destruction during conflict with the Sioux in 1862.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.6 km² (1.8 mi²). 4.5 km² (1.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.79% water.

Flandreau has been assigned the ZIP code 57028 and the FIPS place code 21540.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 2,376 people, 986 households, and 605 families residing in the city. The population density is 530.3/km² (1,370.9/mi²). There are 1,090 housing units at an average density of 243.3/km² (628.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 70.62% White, 0.46% African American, 24.92% Native American, 1.22% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.08% from other races, and 2.69% from two or more races. 1.05% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 986 households out of which 30.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.6% are married couples living together, 12.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.6% are non-families. 34.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.96.

In the city the population is spread out with 26.4% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 20.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 88.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $31,090, and the median income for a family is $40,272. Males have a median income of $26,369 versus $19,738 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,895. 12.2% of the population and 9.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.2% of those under the age of 18 and 10.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
