Gates, New York

Gates is a town in Monroe County, New York. The town is named after General Horatio Gates. Gates is also a census-designated place located in Monroe County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 29,275.

The Town of Gates is in the southwest part of the county.

History

The Town of Gates was organized in 1797 as Northampton in Ontario County. In 1808 the town was subdivided and the part still called Northampton was renamed in 1813 in honor of General Horatio Gates. Parts of the town were later detached to form the City of Rochester and the Town of Greece, both of which now border the town.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 39.7 km² (15.3 mi²). 39.4 km² (15.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.52% water.

Government

The town of gates has a 4 member town council which is elected every 4 years, Its town supervisor is Ralph J. Esposito is up for election every 2 years he was first elected in November of 1989.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 29,275 people, 11,730 households, and 8,046 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 742.2/km² (1,921.8/mi²). There are 12,049 housing units at an average density of 305.5/km² (791.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 88.62% White, 6.38% African American, 0.17% Native American, 2.36% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.09% from other races, and 1.35% from two or more races. 2.92% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 11,730 households out of which 28.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.8% are married couples living together, 10.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.4% are non-families. 26.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 22.6% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 92.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.5 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $45,709, and the median income for a family is $53,964. Males have a median income of $38,815 versus $29,024 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $21,353. 5.6% of the population and 4.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.2% of those under the age of 18 and 6.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
