Girard Township, Michigan

Girard Township is a township located in Branch County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 1,916.

A small area in the south of the township, just west of Interstate 69 has been annexed to the city of Coldwater, even though it is noncontiguous with the rest of the city. An area on the east side of Morrison Lake in the Coldwater River is considered to be part of the Coldwater urban area, although it remains unincorporated. There are no other incorporated municipalities within the township. The only other concentrated settlements is the unincorporated community of Girard is at Template:Coor dms. The FIPS place code is 32260.

Geography

Most of the township is drained by branches of the Hog Creek, a tributary of the Coldwater River, which flows through the southwest of the township. Tenkonsha Creek drains the northeast of the township, flowing into the St. Joseph River near Tekonsha.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 93.9 km² (36.2 mi²). 91.3 km² (35.2 mi²) of it is land and 2.6 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.76% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,916 people, 705 households, and 528 families residing in the township. The population density is 21.0/km² (54.4/mi²). There are 851 housing units at an average density of 9.3/km² (24.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 97.65% White, 0.78% African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.16% from other races, and 0.47% from two or more races. 0.84% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 705 households out of which 27.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.1% are married couples living together, 7.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.0% are non-families. 21.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the township the population is spread out with 19.7% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 29.1% from 25 to 44, 28.5% from 45 to 64, and 13.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 110.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 111.7 males.

The median income for a household in the township is $43,173, and the median income for a family is $50,197. Males have a median income of $34,545 versus $23,393 for females. The per capita income for the township is $21,016. 6.6% of the population and 5.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.0% of those under the age of 18 and 10.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
