Greenville is a town located in Greene County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,316.

History

The Town of Greenville was established in 1803 but briefly changed its name to Freehold.

Geography

The north town line is the border of Albany County, New York. The town is partly in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 101.3 km² (39.1 mi²). 100.8 km² (38.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.49% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,316 people, 1,345 households, and 918 families residing in the town. The population density is 32.9/km² (85.2/mi²). There are 1,694 housing units at an average density of 16.8/km² (43.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.95% White, 0.48% Black or African American, 0.15% Native American, 1.15% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 1.00% from two or more races. 1.63% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,345 households out of which 30.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.5% are married couples living together, 9.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% are non-families. 26.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.1% under the age of 18, 5.4% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 25.0% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 95.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $38,423, and the median income for a family is $45,880. Males have a median income of $35,217 versus $25,216 for females. The per capita income for the town is $19,113. 8.7% of the population and 6.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.7% of those under the age of 18 and 6.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
