Indian giver

The term Indian giver is an expression used for any individual who gives something and then retakes it.
The etymology of the word is not entirely certain. It may derive from a former use of the adjective "Indian" to mean false or deceitful, or it may have originally referred to ritual gift-giving in Native American cultures, such as the potlatch. Indian Giver was a name put upon Native Americans by settlers when they (Native Americans) tried to retake land that the medicine-men saw used in ways that did not sit well with them.
Another origin of this phrase may be liked to the way that many Native Americans sold goods to large groups of settlers. They would walk into a large group and pass out their wares to everyone in the group. The settlers thought that this was a gift from this Native American and were shocked when they came back asking for either payment or the item back.
Yet another possible origin is in reference to Andrew Jackson, who promised Native Americans land and shortly after sent them on the Trail of Tears. Jackson, having ensured land to various Native American tribes and then having recanted his promise, is an example of an Indian giver.
