Jonesville is a town located in Lee County, Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 995. It is the county seat of Lee CountyTemplate:GR.

History

The town of Jonesville was established in 1794 as the County Seat of Lee County and was named for Frederick Jones. The town was incorporated in 1884, and re-incorporated in 1901.

Jonesville is located at 36°41'17" North, 83°6'59" West (36.688012, -83.116305)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.8 km² (1.1 mi²). 2.8 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 995 people, 497 households, and 261 families residing in the town. The population density is 349.2/km² (901.1/mi²). There are 565 housing units at an average density of 198.3/km² (511.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 99.30% White, 0.10% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.60% from two or more races. 0.40% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 497 households out of which 22.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.8% are married couples living together, 12.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 47.3% are non-families. 45.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 20.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.91 and the average family size is 2.66.

In the town the population is spread out with 18.1% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 25.4% from 45 to 64, and 23.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 87.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $16,548, and the median income for a family is $27,368. Males have a median income of $26,950 versus $19,297 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,347. 32.3% of the population and 25.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 55.6% of those under the age of 18 and 24.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
