Keystone Heights is a city located in Clay County, Florida. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,349.

Named after the state of Pennsylvania, the "Keystone State".

History

Founded by Pennsylvanians who named it after their home state, residents began relocating here in the early 1920s. The city was chartered in April, 1925.

It is located in the northeast region of the state of Florida, situated in the southern tip of Clay County among many sand-bottom lakes.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.0 km² (4.6 mi²). 11.8 km² (4.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.94% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,349 people, 515 households, and 374 families residing in the city. The population density is 114.7/km² (296.9/mi²). There are 562 housing units at an average density of 47.8/km² (123.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.07% White, 0.44% African American, 0.52% Native American, 0.52% Asian, 0.30% Pacific Islander, 1.19% from other races, and 0.96% from two or more races. 2.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 515 households out of which 36.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.7% are married couples living together, 12.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% are non-families. 24.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.09.

In the city the population is spread out with 28.1% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 25.0% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 17.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 86.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $39,519, and the median income for a family is $47,404. Males have a median income of $37,500 versus $24,886 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,157. 8.3% of the population and 5.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.5% of those under the age of 18 and 7.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
