McGehee is a city located in Desha County, Arkansas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,570.

History

McGehee was founded as a rail-road town. The population of McGehee has been declining since the late 1960s. McGehee was the home town of horror novelist Nancy A. Collins.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.6 km² (6.4 mi²). 16.6 km² (6.4 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 4,570 people, 1,836 households, and 1,259 families residing in the city. The population density is 274.8/km² (711.7/mi²). There are 2,044 housing units at an average density of 122.9/km² (318.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 56.72% White, 41.51% Black or African American, 0.57% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 0.70% from two or more races. 1.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,836 households out of which 34.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.7% are married couples living together, 22.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.4% are non-families. 29.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the city the population is spread out with 28.5% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 25.0% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 82.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 76.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $21,909, and the median income for a family is $25,270. Males have a median income of $31,429 versus $19,464 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,191. 30.0% of the population and 26.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 42.2% of those under the age of 18 and 23.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
