Nashville, North Carolina

Nashville is a town located in Nash County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,309. It is the county seat of Nash CountyTemplate:GR. Like Nashville, Tennessee, the town and its county were named for Francis Nash, an officer of the North Carolina militia who died in the American Revolutionary War.

Nashville is located at 35°58'10" North, 77°57'41" West (35.969345, -77.961496)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 7.8 km² (3.0 mi²). 7.8 km² (3.0 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 4,309 people, 1,629 households, and 1,124 families residing in the town. The population density is 550.9/km² (1,425.2/mi²). There are 1,751 housing units at an average density of 223.9/km² (579.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 54.82% White, 43.10% African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.58% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.60% from other races, and 0.60% from two or more races. 1.25% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,629 households out of which 32.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.4% are married couples living together, 16.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.0% are non-families. 28.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the town the population is spread out with 23.7% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 30.4% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 16.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 89.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $36,371, and the median income for a family is $44,180. Males have a median income of $32,282 versus $22,176 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,603. 10.5% of the population and 9.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.0% of those under the age of 18 and 15.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
