Location

Pulaski is located southeast of Bloomfield and west of Milton on Highway 2 in Davis County, Iowa.

Upcoming events

  • In 2006 Pulaski will be 150 years old. As of now no celebration has been mentioned.
  • The Davis County Fair will be July 13-17 at the Davis County Fairgrounds in Bloomfield.

Businesses

The businesses in Pulaski are: The Hawkeye Trader, (in City Hall building), Pulaski Lumberyard, (west side of south 2nd street), B&B Gas, (northwest corner of the intersection of Higway 2 and 2nd Street), Sinclair Gas Station & Restaurant, (south side of Highway 2 on the east end of town), Pulaski Car Wash, and Pulaski Volunteer Fire Department (north of lumberyard).

Recent News

The Hawkeye Trader is in the process of getting a new building. Formerly they were on the east side of Second street in an old building. They are now temporarily in the old bank building across Highway 2. They are tearing down 4 buildings on the east side of 2nd street to make way for their new building.

As of now one building is down and two are in the process of being demolished on the east side and the former B&B gas building is gone. The remaining ones will come down later this year.

The old Pulaski School is up for sale along with the house next to it. It is located on the east side of town across from Sinclair gas station.

The Annual Corn Show

The Pulaski Corn Show is held in September every year on a Friday and Saturday in the Pulaski Park (located east of the intersection of 2nd street and highway 2). During it the Pulaski Depot is open and so is the Arts and Crafts building. Local organizations serve lunch and dinner each day and there is entertainment every night. On Friday there is a princess contest for 4th and 5th grade girls and on Saturday there is a parade with local organizations and businesses' floats.

Churches in Pulaski are: Pulaski Mennonite Church (south and west of Pulaski), Calvary Community Church (north 2nd street), and Grace Church (north of Sinclair gas station).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.0 km² (0.4 mi²). 1.0 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 249 people, 103 households, and 70 families residing in the city. The population density is 259.8/km² (669.3/mi²). There are 113 housing units at an average density of 117.9/km² (303.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.19% White, 0.00% African American, 0.40% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 2.41% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 103 households out of which 31.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.2% are married couples living together, 3.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.0% are non-families. 30.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 24.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the city the population is spread out with 27.7% under the age of 18, 4.0% from 18 to 24, 24.5% from 25 to 44, 25.3% from 45 to 64, and 18.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 84.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $30,694, and the median income for a family is $38,750. Males have a median income of $24,318 versus $23,750 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,334. 10.8% of the population and 6.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.7% of those under the age of 18 and 14.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
