Sedgwick, Maine

Sedgwick is a town located in Hancock County, Maine. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,102. Sedgwick is home to many granite quarries, most of which in various stages of abandonment. James Russell Wiggins, former U.S. Representative to the United Nations, is buried in Rural Cemetery. Sedgwick schools were once featured on a MoveOn.org segment. The countryside around Sedgwick is a haven for birdwatchers as well as an out-of-the-way tourist stop with several bed and breakfast locations.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 80.5 km² (31.1 mi²). 70.0 km² (27.0 mi²) of it is land and 10.5 km² (4.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 13.06% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,102 people, 470 households, and 307 families residing in the town. The population density is 15.7/km² (40.8/mi²). There are 671 housing units at an average density of 9.6/km² (24.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.64% White, 0.18% African American, 0.73% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 1.91% from two or more races. 1.09% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 470 households out of which 29.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.3% are married couples living together, 7.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.5% are non-families. 29.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.0% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 27.6% from 45 to 64, and 15.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 100.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $35,000, and the median income for a family is $40,547. Males have a median income of $26,607 versus $21,944 for females. The per capita income for the town is $19,772. 8.5% of the population and 6.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.7% of those under the age of 18 and 4.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
