Waterloo (village), New York

Waterloo is a village located in Seneca County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 5,111.

The Village of Waterloo is mostly in the Town of Waterloo, but a small part of the village is in the Town of Fayette.

History

The current site of the village was the location of the Cayuga village "Skoiyase" (flowing water). The Village of Waterloo was incorporated in 1866, the same year it celebrated the first Memorial Day. The village was also known as New Hudson at times. Waterloo was first settled around 1795.

Geography

The Seneca River passes through the town.

Waterloo is located at 42°54'13" North, 76°51'34" West (42.903697, -76.859517)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 5.6 km² (2.2 mi²). 5.4 km² (2.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.24% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 5,111 people, 1,939 households, and 1,285 families residing in the village. The population density is 939.7/km² (2,439.3/mi²). There are 2,050 housing units at an average density of 376.9/km² (978.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 97.61% White, 0.82% Black or African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.49% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. 1.17% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,939 households out of which 31.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.5% are married couples living together, 14.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% are non-families. 28.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the village the population is spread out with 24.5% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 20.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 84.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.8 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $33,571, and the median income for a family is $41,725. Males have a median income of $34,911 versus $23,385 for females. The per capita income for the village is $16,538. 12.1% of the population and 7.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.9% of those under the age of 18 and 9.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
