Zearing is a city located in Story County, Iowa. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 617.

History

Zearing was formed out of the Lincoln Township. It was founded on October 17, 1881, later incorporated on February 6, 1883. Named for William Mitchell Zearing, a judge from Chicago who donated a bell to the first church of Zearing.

Education

Zearing is served by the Colo-NESCO Community School District. Zearing's facility houses the middle school (grades 5-8). The district's central office is based in McCallsburg, along with an elementary school (K-4). Colo also has an elementary school, as well as the district's high school (grades 9-12).

Zearing is located at 42°9'42" North, 93°17'53" West (42.161561, -93.298038)Template:GR. Zearing is located 10 miles north of US Hwy 30 along US Hwy 65, 14 miles east of Interstate 35 on Story Co Rd E-18 (130th Street).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.9 km² (0.7 mi²). 1.9 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 617 people, 229 households, and 158 families residing in the city. The population density is 321.9/km² (828.4/mi²). There are 249 housing units at an average density of 129.9/km² (334.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.57% White, 0.16% African American, 0.81% Native American, 0.65% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.16% from other races, and 0.65% from two or more races. 0.65% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 229 households out of which 35.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.0% are married couples living together, 6.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.6% are non-families. 28.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.13.

In the city the population is spread out with 26.6% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 19.3% from 45 to 64, and 19.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 86.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $37,614, and the median income for a family is $45,156. Males have a median income of $30,398 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,615. 3.2% of the population and 0.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.0% of those under the age of 18 and 1.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
