Barrow County is a county located in the state of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 46,144. The county's explosive growth is evident with a population of 56,418 according to the 2004 U.S. Census Estimate. The county's county seat is Winder, Georgia6.

This county is part of the Atlanta Metropolitan Area.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 422 km² (163 mi²). 420 km² (162 mi²) of it is land and 2 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.41% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 46,144 people, 16,354 households, and 12,543 families residing in the county. The population density is 110/km² (284/mi²). There are 17,304 housing units at an average density of 41/km² (107/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 84.84% White, 9.72% Black or African American, 0.30% Native American, 2.20% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.50% from other races, and 1.40% from two or more races. 3.16% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 16,354 households out of which 39.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.30% are married couples living together, 11.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.30% are non-families. 18.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.79 and the average family size is 3.17.

In the county the population is spread out with 28.40% under the age of 18, 8.50% from 18 to 24, 34.50% from 25 to 44, 19.50% from 45 to 64, and 9.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 98.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $45,019, and the median income for a family is $49,722. Males have a median income of $34,510 versus $23,369 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,350. 8.30% of the population and 6.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.10% of those under the age of 18 and 14.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
