Beatty is a census-designated place and town located on the Amargosa River in Nye County, Nevada. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 1,154.

The town was named after Jim Beatty who settled on a ranch in the area at the end of the 19th century. In 1905, Beatty became a railway center for the Bullfrog Mining District which included mining towns such as nearby Rhyolite, Nevada.

Beatty is the nearest town to the Yucca Mountain facility (18 miles to the east), and houses Bechtel Corporation's visitor center for the site (as the site itself is in restricted-access land). Beatty is also close to Death Valley National Park.

Geography

Beatty is located at 36°54'34" North, 116°45'16" West (36.909337, -116.754531)Template:GR, at 3,320 feet in elevation.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 454.9 km² (175.6 mi²). 454.9 km² (175.6 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,154 people, 535 households, and 270 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 2.5/km² (6.6/mi²). There are 740 housing units at an average density of 1.6/km² (4.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 90.90% White, 0.09% African American, 1.47% Native American, 1.21% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 3.12% from other races, and 3.21% from two or more races. 8.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 535 households out of which 26.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.8% are married couples living together, 6.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 49.5% are non-families. 43.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.16 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 26.1% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 29.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 119.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 121.6 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $41,250, and the median income for a family is $52,639. Males have a median income of $44,438 versus $25,962 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $16,971. 13.4% of the population and 10.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.1% of those under the age of 18 and 19.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
