From Academic Kids

The name George has its origin in ancient Greek, meaning something like "farmer, man from the country." The name is a derivation of the Greek male name Ge�rgios (Γεώργιος), which developed out of ge� (=earth), and ergo (=to work).

It remains a popular name, and has many variations.
