Brule County is a county located in the state of South Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 5,364. Its county seat is Chamberlain6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,192 km² (846 mi²). 2,121 km² (819 mi²) of it is land and 71 km² (28 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.25% water.

Townships

The county is divided into twenty-two townships: America, Brule, Chamberlain, Cleveland, Eagle, Highland, Kimball, Lyon, Ola, Plainfield, Pleasant Grove, Plummer, Pukwana, Red Lake, Richland, Smith, Torrey Lake, Waldro, West Point, Wilbur, Willow Lake, Union; and one area of unorganized territory: Grandview.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,364 people, 1,998 households, and 1,328 families residing in the county. The population density is 3/km² (6/mi²). There are 2,272 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (3/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 89.91% White, 0.26% Black or African American, 8.28% Native American, 0.48% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.06% from other races, and 0.99% from two or more races. 0.48% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,998 households out of which 31.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.20% are married couples living together, 7.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.50% are non-families. 29.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 3.14.

In the county, the population is spread out with 30.50% under the age of 18, 6.80% from 18 to 24, 24.70% from 25 to 44, 21.20% from 45 to 64, and 16.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 93.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.10 males.
