Lincoln County is a county located in the state of Kentucky. As of 2000, the population is 23,361. Its county seat is Stanford6.

Lincoln, organized in 1780, was one of the first three counties formed out of the original Kentucky County, which was still part of Virginia at the time. It is not named for Abraham Lincoln.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 871 km² (336 mi²). 871 km² (336 mi²) of it is land and 1 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.06% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 23,361 people, 9,206 households, and 6,729 families residing in the county. The population density is 27/km² (70/mi²). There are 10,127 housing units at an average density of 12/km² (30/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.12% White, 2.53% Black or African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.38% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. 0.89% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 9,206 households out of which 33.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.60% are married couples living together, 10.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.90% are non-families. 23.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 2.95.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.70% under the age of 18, 8.40% from 18 to 24, 29.80% from 25 to 44, 23.10% from 45 to 64, and 13.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 96.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $26,542, and the median income for a family is $32,284. Males have a median income of $26,395 versus $20,517 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,602. 21.10% of the population and 16.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 27.10% of those under the age of 18 and 22.90% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
