Union County is a county located in the state of South Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 29,881. Its county seat is Union6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,336 km² (516 mi²). 1,332 km² (514 mi²) of it is land and 5 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.35% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 29,881 people, 12,087 households, and 8,497 families residing in the county. The population density is 22/km² (58/mi²). There are 13,351 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (26/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 67.81% White, 31.05% Black or African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.16% from other races, and 0.61% from two or more races. 0.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 12,087 households out of which 29.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.80% are married couples living together, 16.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.70% are non-families. 26.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the county, the population is spread out with 23.80% under the age of 18, 8.20% from 18 to 24, 27.90% from 25 to 44, 24.40% from 45 to 64, and 15.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 89.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $31,441, and the median income for a family is $37,661. Males have a median income of $29,371 versus $20,701 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,877. 14.30% of the population and 11.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.70% of those under the age of 18 and 15.90% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
